International Fibre Art Festival
Roscommon April & May 2022
The International Fibre Art Festival, Roscommon, runs from Thursday 28 April to Sunday 1 May 2022 with two major exhibitions continuing until 14 May 2022.
Slow Time with a Butterfly is an exhibition of work by the members of Contemporary Tapestry Artists Ireland at King House, Boyle
Interconnections 4 is a biennale exhibition of hand woven, contemporary, fine art tapestries from Ireland and Scotland, curated by Frances Crowe and Joan Baxter. This is the fourth collaboration between the two countries, bringing a focus on handwoven tapestries as an artform. The exhibiting artists are Frances Crowe, Mary Cuthbert, Terry Dunne and Angela Forte (all from Ireland) and Elizabeth Radcliffe, John Brennan, Claire Coyle and Joan Baxter (all from Scotland). This exhibition will consist of about 40 tapestries of all sizes from miniature to massive, on a large range of themes. The tapestries have been made over the past four years by the 8 artists. Visitors to the exhibition can expect to be blown away by the beauty, colour and sheer technical virtuosity of the work. Contemporary tapestries are made by hand on simple looms, in the same way as the historic tapestries that we see in castles and country houses. The technique is a very ancient one and almost impossible to mechanise.
The curators Frances Crowe and Joan Baxter first met in 2012 and again in 2016 when they exhibited together in Ireland. The opportunity to exhibit together allows the artists to forge creative links, to collaborate on a number of projects, to learn from each other and become firm friends.
